This position is focused on the maintenance, care, and planning of all grounds-related activities for Next Academy’s current soccer fields, with a vision to expand into additional sports facilities in 2026 and beyond.

Some tasks may require early morning work for optimal field preparation, but overall scheduling will remain flexible, with certain projects being completed as time and weather allow. The final work schedule will be developed collaboratively with the Executive Director to ensure alignment with organizational needs and seasonal priorities.

The role blends hands-on fieldwork with leadership and management responsibilities, including coordination with support staff, student workers, and third-party vendors.

Job Responsibilities: As Head of Grounds, your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

Grounds Maintenance Planning

• Develop and maintain a comprehensive annual maintenance plan mowing, including fertilization, aeration, seeding, irrigation, pest control, and top-dressing schedules.

• Perform hands-on fieldwork such as mowing, field lining, edging, and repairing worn areas.
  Ensure fields are game-ready, safe, and visually appealing before each season and event.
  Regularly inspect fields for hazards such as holes, divots, or drainage issues and address them promptly.

• Establish seasonal checklists to ensure fields remain in top condition year-round.

Team Leadership & Delegation

• Provide additional tasks to the NXT|Grounds Support Team, including student workers.

• Provide guidance, training, and oversight to ensure work is done safely and correctly.

• Maintain accountability by confirming tasks are completed to the required standards.

• Schedule and manage work done by third-party vendors (e.g., large-scale fertilization, irrigation repair, turf treatments).
  Determine whether tasks should be completed internally or outsourced based on cost, scope, and urgency.

• Develop and maintain vendor relationships to ensure consistent quality and service.

Equipment & Resource Management

• Oversee care and upkeep of groundkeeping equipment, including mowers, line markers, and irrigation systems.

• Maintain an organized inventory of supplies such as paint, seed, fertilizer, and tools.

• Submit requests for equipment purchases or replacements as needed.

NXT Grounds Assistants support the maintenance and improvement of Wayne Sports Park. Student workers can set flexible schedules and complete essential tasks such as mowing, cleaning, trimming, light field work, and game-day preparation.

This is a labor-intensive outdoor role and a great opportunity for students who want work experience, leadership development, and flexible pay.

Job Responsibilities: 

• Mowing, trimming, and weed-eating (training provided)

• Trash pickup and cleanliness checks across fields and public areas

• Restroom support tasks (cleanliness checks, stocking supplies as assigned)

• Moving equipment and assisting with field setup

• Supporting special projects such as:

• small landscaping improvements

Qualifications

• Able to lift up to 60 lbs

• Able to work outdoors in summer conditions

• Willingness to follow safety procedures and use tools responsibly

Preferred (Not Required)

• Any landscaping, maintenance, or outdoor work experience

• Positive attitude and strong follow-through
